SACHIKA @ the BK Fashion Week 2009
SACHIKA Brooklyn Fashion Week/2009 from cyril mahe on Vimeo.

We hadn't slept much the night before..Sometimes the excitement is so great my mind keeps running non-stop, images, visions and anticipation, I just couldn't sleep. The entire night, we were both sitting here at the studio still thinking about ways to improve the show: accessories, hats, gloves, jewelries, hoisery... To me, it can never be good enough! LOL... I found the music for the runway the same night...Yes, the night before, the music wasn't even ready yet. Talking about last minute!! Sometimes I feel like the last minute rush forces me to make better decisions in a quick manner. At 3am, I finally chose something and sent it to our executive producer, Niro, for him to edit it and add it to the intro that we had recorded with my voice: "You are now entering the world of SAAAACHIKAAAA. Sachika is a movement for the modern woman: she's fierce, she's independent and she can do whatever she wants." I love that intro, I wanted to convey the spirit of our label, a quote that people would remember our brand for...
So we had about 2-3 hours of sleep, just enough to recharge our batteries and to get some bags under our eyes! LOL!! Call time for all staff was 3pm in Brooklyn. We arrived "unfashionably" late at 5pm. WOW talking about lateness, we were pretty embarrassed as most our models and all our staff were already there. It's just that for some reason everything was delayed! Our hairstylists had been calling us several times saying that we needed to get there asap. I thought to myself ok, we need to be there asap because we are the designers and we need to keep an eye on what's going on with our models and sponsors... When I got there, I was astonished to see our hairstylists sitting down with their jackets on, instead of working on the models. I promptly asked them what was happening when "Dan" stood up and introduced himself as the hair/makeup coordinator. He informed us that we were not allowed to bring our own makeup and hair team and that most our models had already their hair and makeup done. How could that be even possible? This was NOT part of the plan!!! I guess there was a serious miscommunication somewhat along the process. I schemed through the prep room and didn't see any of our models so I ran outside to look for them. This is when I almost cried. One of my prettiest model was unrecognizable! Here hair was up in a bun with a ton of gel and her makeup was so different from the one we had requested.. Wow...I was seriously devastated. Following her, I saw 6 other of our models, all with the same look. My confidence level immediately dropped. I was now super stressed and scared! This is why our hairstylists wanted us to get here asap, THE WRONG HAIR AND MAKEUP WAS BEING DONE on our models!!Oh nooooooooooooooo!!!! It just didn't match our clothing!!! This is a huge problem when you're a designer and you create a " look". This was NOT THE LOOK we had envisioned. And our poor sponsors, they worked so hard to achieve what we wanted!!
We had to find a solution and at that point at 5pm, two hours before the doors open, either we keep all the models hair "as is" this was the look they were supposed to have for the first Designers ( we were scheduled last) or either we change the look of the remaining ones that haven't had their hair and makeup done to smooth it out. We chose option 2. We were so afraid of "failing" and not being able to accomplish our goal and vision that from that moment on, nothing else mattered. We totally switched our gear to full speed. We only had 2 hours to fix all the problems. I took a deep breath, tried to focus and work with what we had. INTELLIGENCE: capacity to adapt. I tried to be calm and collected and not to yell at the organizers and hairstylists and makeup artists. BRRREAAATTTHHHHHHEEEEEE. The next hours were quite intense: no food, no rest, no phone. NOTHING. One thing: FOCUS. We literally received our step and repeat, fashion show brochures and gift certificates 20 min before our show!!! My sister was throwing on peacock feathers on the model's hair and she added purses, shoes, stockings right before the show started! We would glance at each model from head to toe toe just before they walk the runway to make sure each outfit made sense...TALKING ABOUT STRESS!!!
Right before the first beat dropped, my heart just pounded and when our first model struck the runway all the way to the end of the catwalk with all the photographers, the music pumping the entire tent, an overwhelming feeling of joy and satisfaction took over. I was even dancing backstage!!! It was so excited to see all our dresses displayed on the catwalk on the models! I peaked at the audience in between each model and there were applauds, whistles and lots of smiles in the audience...Ahhh.... What A RELIEF!! IT WAS SOOOOOOO WORTH IT!! We've been having amazing reviews. Makes me think God (Buddha) is on our side...THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT...

Addicted to it!.....
Here we go...we find ourselves just few hours before our next show!...Everytime, this rushed feeling of wanting to accomplish more, to surpass ourselves, to be better and better is overwhelming and....ADDICTIVE! This is the adrenaline we fear and at the same time, LOVE!
Its amazing...that energy and inexplicable superpower that we get from this rush...we can loose sleep, forget about eating, forget about time...we forget almost about everything...the only thing we see ahead of us is this next project! It is now 10:20pm and we are not nearly done...so much to do...we need more time, time...that clock keeps ticking and we know we won't be sleeping much tonight! The nerve wrecking moments, the anticipation, the vision....its my FUEL!
In the end, I am so grateful for having drive and ambition and no matter what you do, please do enjoy it...cause the journey is much more important than the destination!
"Live with passion...."

Sweet and Salty love...

We both fell in love today...
They say love happens when you least expect it...Well, it seems pretty true as it happened for the very first time to the both of us...TODAY.
We had just left this wonderful Italian shoe store called OTTIVA on Spring street in Soho, after we chose 15 amazing pair of shoes/boots for our fashion show on Friday. We were both starving but we had both decided to "master clean" our body for the next couple of days. Not that we want to lose weight, far from it, but because we both felt like we had indulged ourselves while were were in Cali last week and wanted to feel "healthier". On our way back to the train, as my stomach screamed, my eyes laid down on a gorgeous purple and white front store which instantly called my name. I looked closely inside and saw boxes which appeared to be boxes of TRUFFLES with some orange sparkles with such different beautiful textures. I looked closely behind the glass and saw a few European men drinking what appeared to be shotglasses of melted hot chocolate... My heart began to race and before I even knew it, a supreme force took over me and I found myself inside...Temptation...what a sin...From that moment on, I can barely remember what happened to me. As my pupils got wider while I looked at those beautiful curvy and luscious balls of pleasure, I was taken by a force larger than life: I had completely let go of my weekly goal of "fasting" and even worse, my hands by now had grabbed the "Mo's Bacon Bar" a 45% chocolate bar with applewood smoked bacon, alderwood smoked salt!!! I have made the solemn decision not to eat meat anymore and all of a sudden, I was struck by amnesia!!!...ahhhhh....I chose chocolate with BACON!!...I just couldn't resist it, the thought of crispy, sweet and salty...ahhhhhh.....my love affair with this deadly combination started long time ago, from my early childhood as my parents made me try pineapple, mango and apple with salt/hot peppers. Later on, I had always loved the combination of bacon with maple syrup...Finally, someone understood me... My obsession for healthy lifestyle quickly unraveled into an obsession for instant gratification...I just had to feel it in my mouth!
I did enjoy my train ride...
" Snap off just a tiny piece and place it in your mouth, let the lust of salt and sweet coat your tongue"...
Thank you Katrina.
I Love you.
What about you? What is your obsession? Any other deadly combination?

Why can't my boyfriend and my twin sister get along???

Now that we are both single, I look back and analyze the history of our dating lives...and noticed something very strange: none of our ex boyfriends got along well with "the other twin "...
This is quite interesting because you would think that if a man wants to be in my life, he would want to win over my family's heart and this would include ( if not essential) winning over my twin sister's heart!...Nope, none of my exes really appreciated my sister and my sister's ex boyfriend did not like me either. Come to believe, is there a rivalry or sense of competition between two people who are both very important in ours lives?
First, it has been proven that romantic relationships with a twin are usually complex because the closeness between the twins can seem like a barrier to the relationship. The fact is, the closeness between twins can rarely be matched and very often the significant other does not feel as important as the twin.
In our case, my twin sister and I have always been very independent from one another. We attended different colleges, different programs, had separate jobs, basically had VERY separate lives...The people at our jobs didn't know we each had a twin! When I had a boyfriend, I would spend a lot of time alone with him and most of the time, he would only see me and would only hear/see my sister only at special occasions (a birthday, Xmas, etc). However, I've often been reproached by my twin sister for neglecting her and for being too much "into my man". For my part, I always believed that dating a twin should be no different than dating a regular, non-twin person. You are dating one person and each person, regardless of who else they may be related to, is an individual. And so I always felt torn between those two people that I really love. If I spent too much time with my then-boyfriend, my sister would think I was leaving the rest of the world out and that I was in my own bubble. If I spent some time with my sister, my boyfriend(now ex) would complain and say that I'm not ready for a real relationship. He even sarcastically said that I should consider " marrying my twin sister"...whoa! This has always been a problem and it was always difficult for me to cope with because no matter what I did, I was often left with a feeling of guilt. On the other hand, my twin sister's ex boyfriend did not like me because he thought I was "mistreating" my sister and being selfish. When me and her would fight she would confide to him, he would get emotional and then he would give me the cold shoulder. Geez!!!... He basically started acting like her twin!
Ever since we moved to NY together, we got closer because we only had each other when we moved here. It allowed us to spend much more time together and made us realize and that we actually form an amazing team when it comes to work. My sister and I now run our company (www.SACHIKA.com)and we are involved in several other projects together. We are now basically together every day. Ambition and career is what really brought us closer.
We now know that we are the best business partners for each other!!
Do you think this situation would hinder our future relationships? How would you feel dating a twin who is working everyday with her sister? Under such circumstances, would you feel a rivalry? Would you feel threatened by the bond that I have with my twin sister ? Any piece of advice to better our future relationships?

Do twins have special powers/psychic connection?

Being a twin is something so ever special.
I was born a twin so I don't know any other way of living besides the one of being a twin. Sometimes I try to imagine how my life would be if I was "normal". Well, my life would be totally different.
We grew up and literally went through all stages in life almost at the same time: birth, first tooth, graduation, puberty, high school, first kiss, college, first love, etc. I was always ahead of my sister for most things ( I'm older by a hopping 5 minute!) and that is why we were basically always able to relate to one another. I do not recall a period in my life where my sister was not a part of it. She's everywhere throughout the album of my life from birth until now and needless to say that we have a very special bond.
We grew up in a large family of 6 siblings: us being the oldest, 2 younger sisters and identical twin brothers as well! Yup, two sets of identical twins in our family!! Our parents simply had the magic touch:) Although we are both close to our other sisters, it would be accurate to say that we are by far the closest. We have never experienced some sort of situation where I " strongly felt" something about my sister or vice versa but I would say that the closeness between us allows me to be able to read her mind and she can often read mine as well. We know each other so well that sometimes I just have to glance at her and I would know what she's thinking. Her body language, her facial expressions, I know her taste and opinions, etc. To me, she is easily readable. Most of the time, we answer the same things at the same time with the same tone...FREAKY! I hate it when it happens cause I know we sound so creepy! And so most of the time, we end up looking at each other and we both say " shut up! why do you have to say the same thing as me?" LOL, I'm sure we also look funny when that happens... Sometimes, we've had almost identical dreams...very strange as I think dreams mean a lot...
I believe this type of bond and closeness is the same type as certain couples (soulmates) or long-time best friends that are extremely close to one another can experience. Now thank god, nothing serious has ever happened to neither of us for me to able to say that I would feel something. However, I believe that I'm an intuitive person by nature and sometimes I do see things and have dreams that do happen and so, I wouldn't be surprised if I felt something in case of emergency. It is most likely more a question of connection and closeness rather than being a twin or not...I think.
Have you lived a psychic connection with someone you'd like to share?

Have You Ever Dated a Twin?

Being an identical twin is simply a wonderful thing. From the moment we were born, we basically had a best friend, a favorite sister, a partner in crime: someone who goes through all the same stages in life at the same time.
According to everyone, that "someone" looks very much like me if not " identical" to me. Being a twin, I can tell you that we have huge differences and I am always still shocked to see that many people do not see those differences between us. It may sound weird but yes I think we look very different. Do you have a brother or a sister that everyone thinks looks very much like you, but you don't think so? That is a feeling I often experience. Truth is, not only are we very different physically but more importantly our personalities are as well. People just have to get passed the similarities and look for what makes us unique. After all, don't we all want to be unique?...
Well as a twin, I feel like I've often had the desire to really distinguish myself as an individual and not the pair. I always seek to feel special and unique and long to be appreciated for who I am ( yes ME, not my sister) as opposed to always be referred to " The Twins". Dating can be very complicated and awkward for twins (well for us it is!). Most of the times, I happened to be in a serious relationship whereas my twin sister, to be the single one. Fairly simple for all the guys who wanted to a date "us", they would automatically asked my sister out :P
"Now that we are both single, I wonder...how do men choose? "
Do they choose or do they get chosen? What goes through their mind? After all, they ultimately need to make a choice!!! Yup, the fact that we are twins does not mean that we come together as a package...oh no...!!! (BIG NO)
We want you to share your experience with us. Have you ever dated a twin? How did the selection happen? How was the relationship? Any confusion?
